Julie Thomas, Ph.D. Research Professor, Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education

Julie Thomas’ primary research interests include parent engagement, elementary science and engineering education, and science teacher professional development. Her scholarship includes the funding of 20 external grants and the publication of 91 refereed research papers, 22 refereed articles, 10 non-refereed articles, one book and three book chapters. Her research is organized into two distinct themes: a focus on the science teacher and a focus on the science learner.

Thomas’ teaching career began in a kindergarten classroom in rural Nebraska, where she taught for 14 years. She received her master’s in gifted education. Fueled by her classroom experience and children’s enthusiasm for science, Thomas pursued her doctorate and research and teaching related to elementary science education.
