CYFS Evaluation for LPS Mentoring Project
This project addresses the problem of violence vis-à-vis bullying and victimization in middle schools located in Lincoln, Nebraska neighborhoods with high incidents of crime. Bullies and bully-victims are at a high risk of educational failure, becoming school drop outs, internalizing problems, and engaging in criminal, delinquent or gang activities. Recent estimates of bullying in the United States suggest that 30% of students are involved in frequent bullying (Nansel et al., 2001). However, studies conducted through Lincoln Public Schools report prevalence rates much higher at 65% (Swearer et al., 2006).
Target Bullying Research (www.targetbully.com), College of Education and Human Sciences, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will partner with Lincoln Public Schools TeamMates Mentoring Program to create a consortium for this mentoring project. They will work to mitigate the impact of school violence by matching one-to-one mentors with bullies or bully-victims.
The external evaluation of this project will be conducted by the Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools, led by Dr. Gwen Nugent, Research Associate Professor in the Center. Dr. Nugent will be assisted by personnel from the Center’s Statistics and Research Methodology Unit.
