Bridges: School to Home Literacy and Technology Initiative
The Bridges project, funded by the South Carolina Education Telecommunications Commission, developed and implemented a new model for connecting home (informal) and school (formal) education through the delivery of digital media resources and training provided by U. S. public television stations. The project goals were to: (1) improve parents and teachers' use and perceived value of digital technology, (2) improve communication between teachers and parents, (3) promote parental involvement in their child's reading and writing development, and (4) help close the “digital learning divide” that exists for low income (Title I) students and their parents.
The Bridges project demonstrated that capitalizing on digital content available through public television, coupled with the education/outreach training and support infrastructure available through public television stations, provides an effective model for building school and home connections including parental involvement and increased communication between parents, teachers, and children.
