An Extension of Response-to-Intervention: Moving Toward Written Language

Dr. Merilee McCurdy is a recipient of the Society for the Study of School Psychology Early Career Award through which she will study An Extension of Response-to-Intervention: Moving Toward Written Langauge. This project will extend Response-to-Intervention (RtI) efforts in the area of written language. The primary goal of this study is to identify effective means to extend RtI procedures to the area of written language. The secondary goal is to generate results that will provide critical preliminary information to determine the initial effects of RtI writing procedures.

During this project, four local schools will be identified to pilot RtI writing procedures and two school psychology students will provide consultative support to the pilot schools. Major project objectives include the development of the infrastructure needed for grant activities; the provision of consultative support to schools to develop, implement, and monitor RtI writing; an evaluation of RtI writing procedures; and the dissemination of findings.

It is expected that data gathered from this pilot project will be used in future submissions for external funding. In addition, the outcome data and procedural guidelines will be helpful as school psychologists begin to develop RtI procedures in their schools. Finally, it is expected that published and presented findings could spark additional research in this under-examined academic area.
