Summer Writing Institute
The Summer Writing Institute, funded by the Woods Charitable Foundation, Inc., will provide parents with the skills and knowledge they need to help their children succeed educationally. The Institute will address student writing skills and provide individualized writing assessments which will help determine the best way to assist each child. In addition, clinic therapists will teach parents strategies they can use at home to improve their child's writing.
The establishment of this Summer Writing Clinic will benefit the Lincoln community in several ways by: (a) increasing the writing skills of many children using individualized, research-based assessment and intervention techniques; (b) increasing the academic independence of students so that they are more successful when they return to school; (c) empowering each child's parent(s) by providing them with training to serve as home-based academic tutors for their child; and (d) training graduate students in school psychology to work with a diverse group of local students using research-based methods.
The immediate goal of this project is to offer Lincoln families a free clinical service that will provide them with the knowledge they need to improve their child's writing skills. The summer clinic will support parents by teaching them the skills that are necessary to promote their child's writing success. In addition, a secondary goal of the project is to provide an opportunity for graduate students to gain skills that they can apply with children in their future practices.
