Abstract

Nebraska Department of Education and Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services have included nutrition and physical activity assessment in child care (NAP SACC) as part of the Step Up to Quality efforts in Nebraska. Their data collection is ongoing, and 150 self-assessments have been completed by childcare providers in Nebraska.

This grant will develop a website to house and analyze the collected data to determine the impact of Step Up to Quality in NE on improving the quality and environment of child care. Other objectives of the project are to determine the impact of Step Up to Quality across rural and urban NE childcare programs and also across regulation-based contexts (Head Start programs v. non-Head Start programs v. family day care programs).

The results will inform policy makers and other key stakeholders such as researchers, extension professionals and childcare practitioners to improve the Step Up to Quality and NAP SACC efforts in Nebraska, with a long-term goal of improving the childcare environment and preventing childhood obesity. Given that childhood obesity is of significant concern in Nebraska, an improved quality of child care can encourage healthy eating and physical activity habits, engage families and prevent obesity.
