Faculty affiliate Edwards receives research award

CYFS Faculty Affiliate Carolyn Pope Edwards received the University of Nebraska’s 2012 Outstanding Research and Creative Activity Award during the April 11 University-wide Teaching, Research and Engagement Awards Luncheon in Lincoln, Neb.

Edwards, a Willa Cather Professor in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies and Department of Psychology, was one of two recipients of the award. It recognizes a sustained record of outstanding research or creative activity of national / international significance conducted by full-time faculty members at the University of Nebraska. The annual award dates back to 1978. Full Article

CYFS postdoc Ryoo receives university award

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln recently presented the 2011 Outstanding Postdoc Award to Ji Hoon Ryoo, a postdoctoral research associate with the CYFS-housed National Center for Research on Rural Education (R2Ed).

The award recognizes exceptional postdoctoral scholars for their comprehensive efforts in research, teaching, mentoring, innovation and service to UNL or the community. Ryoo received the honor during the Nov. 2 UNL Research Fair. He was nominated by mentor James Bovaird, director of the CYFS Statistics and Research Methodology Unit and associate professor with UNL’s Department of Educational Psychology. Full Article

Student affiliate Koziol receives thesis award

Natalie Koziol, a CYFS graduate student affiliate in educational psychology, recently received the 2010-2011 Folsom Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award. The award recognizes distinguished scholarship and research at the master’s level.

Koziol’s thesis is titled “Evaluating Measurement Invariance with Censored Ordinal Data: A Monte Carlo Comparison of Alternative Model Estimators and Scales of Measurement.” In it, Koziol addresses the statistical testing of measurement invariance, which assumes that a scale measures the same construct when used across time or groups. She specifically evaluates how several factors, including sample size and the non-normality of data, influence the validity of statistical conclusions. She also examines how the effects of these factors vary according to measurement models and estimators. Full Article

CYFS affiliate Knoche receives champion award

Dr. Lisa Knoche, research assistant professor with the Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools, was selected for the State Champion Award by the Region VII Head Start Association.

The State Champion Award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment in the improvement of the lives of children, youth and families. Dr. Knoche will be honored at the opening session of the 2010 Region VII Head Start Association Annual Leadership Conference in Kansas City, Missouri on May 25th. Full Article

Two CYFS researchers receive professorships

Susan Sheridan and Kimberly EspyCongratulations to Susan Sheridan and Kimberly Espy, who received professorships at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s annual All University Honors Convocation April 18, 2010.

Susan Sheridan, director of CYFS and R2Ed, was awarded the George Holmes University Professorship, supported by the University of Nebraska Foundation from the estate of George Holmes, a prominent Lincoln businessman, civic leader and philanthropist of the 1920s. Recipients are faculty who demonstrate an extraordinary level of scholarly or creative achievement and clear potential for continuing major accomplishments that enhance the reputation of the University of Nebraska. Recipients also evidence excellence in teaching and outreach and extensive involvement and service in furthering the University’s missions, including leadership in national or international organizations in their field. Scheel and Kunz receive Woods Charitable Fund award

Congratulations to Drs. Michael Scheel and Gina Kunz on their recent award from the Woods Charitable Fund to support the “Building Bridges through Relationships” high school dropout prevention program. The prevention program offers at-risk students a fresh start in high school with support to reverse trends that would eventually lead to dropping out of high school. Full Article

Faculty affiliate Kupzyk receives APA professional development award

Kevin Kupzyk, statistics and research methodologist with the CYFS Statistics & Research Methodology Unit, was awarded the Stuart C. Tentoni Outstanding Professional Development Program Award from the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS). Kevin’s session, titled ‘Introduction to a Priori Power Analysis for the Grant Writing Process,’ was presented at the 2009 APA annual meeting in Toronto, Canada. Full Article
