Understanding temperament to enhance children’s learning and development


INSIGHTS in Nebraska is a comprehensive social and emotional learning intervention that includes parent, teacher and classroom components that has been found to reduce disruptive behavior, improve attention skills, and improve reading and math achievement.

What is required of participants?


INSIGHTS is open to kindergarten classrooms in central and eastern Nebraska that the U.S. Department of Education has defined as rural, or a remote town.

Teacher Requirements

Teachers will participate in two days of professional development, a weekly 30-minute coaching and planning session, and then teach the INSIGHTS curriculum with a facilitator for 30 minutes, once a week for 10 weeks. Teachers will also fill out information about a small group of their students. Their classroom will also be observed by a trained data collector 2-3 times over the course of a year.

Parent Requirements

Parents will attend six parent sessions over a 10-week period, 2.5 hours each. They will also fill out questionnaires about their children and their parenting five times.

Child Requirements

Children of the parents participating will be assessed on their academic and emotional skills twice in kindergarten and three times in first grade. This assessment will take place during the school day.
