Watering the Seeds of Compassion: Promoting Caring Contexts for Children

Mark T. Greenberg, Ph.D., is founding director of the Edna Bennett Pierce Prevention Research Center and emeritus professor of human development and family studies at Penn State University. His research focuses on preventing behavioral health problems and promoting well-being among youth and their caregivers. Greenberg has made substantial contributions to the field of prevention science since he began his career 40 years ago, which was fueled by a desire to intervene with families and children in early development, before they could form serious mental health or drug and alcohol problems. Recent interests include nurturing mindfulness and compassion in society. He has received numerous awards, including the Urie Bronfenbrenner Award for Lifetime Contribution to Developmental Psychology in the Service of Science and Society from the American Psychological Association. Greenberg also chairs CREATE, a nonprofit focused on improving education and the lives of teachers and students and is one of the founders of the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL).
