CYFS supports eight Layman Award recipients

With collaborative support and seed funding, CYFS faculty affiliates are prepared to grow their research base this spring.

The Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools (CYFS) recently provided grant proposal and development assistance to eight CEHS faculty—all of whom received 2015-16 Layman Awards. The award, funded by UNL’s Office of Research and Economic Development, provides $10,000 in seed money for untenured faculty and supports researchers in their pursuit of external funding. Faculty affiliates recognized as national education leaders

Dawn Davis and Leslie Hawley, faculty affiliates with the Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools, were recently named “emerging leaders in education” by Phi Delta Kappa International, a global association of education professionals. Full Article

Journal of School Psychology names CYFS article best of 2013

A peer-reviewed paper from the Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools has been selected as 2013 Article of the Year by the Journal of School Psychology.

Lead author and CYFS director Susan Sheridan will accept the award from the Society for the Study of School Psychology on Aug. 8 in Washington, D.C., site of the 2014 American Psychological Association Convention. Full Article

Witte recognized for research poster on family-school partnerships

CYFS doctoral student affiliate Amanda Witte received recognition for producing one of the top 10 posters among more than 160 presented at the 2014 UNL Spring Graduate Research and Creative Activities Poster Session in mid-April.

Witte, who manages the CYFS-housed Conjoint Behavioral Consultation (CBC) in Rural Communities project, presented a poster outlining how the CBC intervention’s impact on parent-teacher relationships influences the behavior of K-3 students. Full Article

Davidson earns APA early career award

M. Meghan Davidson, a CYFS faculty affiliate and assistant professor of educational psychology at UNL, has earned the Fritz and Linn Kuder Early Career Scientist/Practitioner Award from Division 17 of the American Psychological Association.

The award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the science and practice of counseling psychology, is given to a scholar who has received a doctoral degree within the past 10 years. Full Article

Sheridan receives ORCA award

A career dedicated to improving children’s development has earned CYFS director Susan Sheridan the University of Nebraska’s highest honor for research.

Sheridan, a George Holmes University Professor of educational psychology, has been named a 2014 recipient of NU’s Outstanding Research and Creative Activity award. Sheridan will accept the honor at the University-wide Teaching, Research and Engagement Awards on April 30. Full Article

Swearer named Willa Cather professor

Susan Swearer, professor of educational psychology and CYFS faculty affiliate, will receive the title of Willa Cather professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Honors Convocation on April 13.

The Willa Cather/Charles Bessey professorships recognize full professors who have established exceptional records of distinguished scholarship or creative activity, with recipients free to select either the Cather or Bessey designation. Full Article

Durden receives USDA award for extension efforts

CYFS faculty affiliate Tonia Durden, assistant professor of child, youth and family studies at UNL, has received the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 2013 Early Achievement Award for helping communities support the healthy development of young children. Full Article
