CYFS-housed center spurs governor’s proclamation of rural education week
With support from the University of Nebraska’s Center for Great Plains Studies and the CYFS-housed National Center for Research on Rural Education (R2Ed), Gov. Dave Heineman has proclaimed April 1-6 as Rural Education Week in the state.
Great Plains director Richard Edwards and R2Ed director Susan Sheridan joined Peter Longo, professor of political science at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, in requesting the proclamation. Its signing sets the stage for two events that will address education in rural communities throughout the Cornhusker State and beyond.
Lady Gaga’s foundation appoints CYFS affiliate Swearer as head of research board

CYFS Faculty Affiliate Susan Swearer will lead a new research board to advise Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation on its youth empowerment and tolerance programs, the foundation announced this week.
The group also will work to boost the influence of the foundation’s proposals and apply well-founded research to all of the foundation’s upcoming programs.
Meisels named founding director of Buffett Early Childhood Institute
Samuel J. Meisels, one of the nation’s leading authorities on the assessment of young children and early childhood development, has been named the founding executive director of the University of Nebraska’s Buffett Early Childhood Institute, NU President James B. Milliken announced Oct. 19.
CYFS releases 2011-2012 Annual Report
CYFS has released its annual report for the 2011 fiscal year, which ran from July 2011 through June 2012.
Titled “Viable Research, Visible Results,” the report encapsulates a year’s worth of ongoing research and recent findings dedicated to improving the prospects of children, youth, families and schools.
Mission to Haiti inspires CYFS director

Classrooms missing roofs and walls. Children lacking access to basic education. Teachers using tarp as chalkboards.
And, amidst it all, the indomitable spirit of people working to improve each other’s lives.
CYFS Director Susan Sheridan encountered these dual realities during a recent mission to La Montagne (mawn-TYN’), Haiti, a beautiful but historically poor mountainside community devastated by a 2010 earthquake.
CYFS releases 2010-2011 Annual Report
The Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families and Schools (CYFS) has released its annual report for the 2010 fiscal year, which ran from July 2010 through June 2011.
Titled “Realizing Potential, Reaching Beyond,” the report features snapshots of the center’s achievements in conducting applied research, translating that research to the field, and collaborating with partners to advance the CYFS mission.
CYFS holds fourth annual art supply drive

UNL faculty and staff have again demonstrated that to give is to receive – especially during the holidays.
CYFS recently completed its fourth annual Gift of Creativity donation drive in an effort to provide art supplies to disadvantaged children, families and schools throughout Nebraska this holiday season.
