Elizabeth Niehaus, assistant professor in educational administration, has been awarded two grants to study Caribbean student engagement in higher education. The American College Personnel Association Foundation awarded a $2,500 grant and the NASPA (Student Affairs Administrators In Higher Education) Foundation awarded $4,650—both projects are housed in CYFS.
As a strategic partner in UNL’s renewed commitment to early childhood, CYFS announced the formation of the Nebraska Early Childhood Research Academy Sept. 24.
Led by Lisa Knoche, CYFS assistant director for research, the CYFS-housed academy will include interdisciplinary partners across all University of Nebraska campuses, as well as the Buffett Early Childhood Institute and community and state agencies.
The MAP Academy will host the Fall 2015 Nebraska Methodology Workshop on Monday, Oct. 26 at Nebraska Innovation Campus. The workshop features Craig Enders, author and professor of quantitative psychology at UCLA.
Enders will lead a workshop for registered participants titled “Dealing with Missing Data” from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
To mark the start of an emerging partnership with Brazilian early childhood researchers, CYFS hosted Brazilian economist Ricardo Paes de Barros for an early childhood presentation Aug. 11 at the Nebraska Union.
In his address, “The status of early childhood development in Brazil and its progress over the past decade: Programs, outcomes and legislation,” Barros presented original research and discussed key topics, including:
UNL’s College of Education and Human Sciences, together with CYFS, has launched an interdisciplinary research initiative to improve education from preschool through higher education.
Led by Greg Welch, research associate professor, the Nebraska Bureau for Education Research, Evaluation and Policy will pursue evaluation and policy research opportunities in partnership with educational entities throughout the state, including the Nebraska Department of Education. The bureau will give special attention to accountability policies that promote improvement in education systems.

For sustained research excellence throughout her career, CYFS director Susan Sheridan has received the Senior Scientist in School Psychology Award from the American Psychological Association’s Division of School Psychology. She will be formally recognized at the APA Convention Aug. 8 in Toronto, Canada.
